| HISTORY |
|
James Phillips Witherow was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the late 1920’s he moved to San Diego at the urging of his older sister (a recent transplant herself) who sold him on the city’s growing opportunities. Arriving in San Diego, ‘Jim’ Witherow secured employment with a local painting and roofing contractor as a salesperson. In 1935, unable to get a pay raise, Mr. Witherow quit his job. With startup capital provided by a loan from his father-in-law, the J. P. Witherow Roofing Co. was born. It has since flourished in the expanding San Diego community for 77 years.
When Mr. Witherow passed away in 1986, his son Richard and daughter Barbara purchased the business from the founder’s estate. In 2002, Richard S. Witherow became the sole owner of the J. P. Witherow Roofing Co.. And in 2010, after 47 years on Morena Boulevard in Old Town, the company moved into its newly designed and built facility in Lakeside, CA.

| RESIDENTIAL |
|
The J. P. Witherow Roofing Co. nurtures its commitment to the residential customer. Both its estimator and superintendent are family members who strive to provide the very best in personal attention and service. Customers, whose original roofs were installed 30 to 40 years ago, are amazed when told their original contract is still on file.

| COMMERCIAL &
MILITARY |
|
The J. P. Witherow Roofing Co. has installed roofing systems on numerous high-profile and landmark buildings in San Diego County and beyond during its 77 year tenure. Some recognizable names are: The Del Mar Racetrack Grandstand, Museum of Contemporary Art, Thornton Hospital, Viejas and Valley View Casinos, Cathedral and Canyon Crest High Schools and in 2011 the VA Hospital in La Jolla. From convention centers to civic centers … to both private and public schools … to military bases encompassing Camp Pendleton, Seal Beach, 29 Palms, etc., the list is a building legacy that makes us extremely proud to be an integral part of the San Diego County construction industry.

| EMPLOYEES |
|
J. P. Witherow Roofing Co.’s biggest assets have been its employees. Since 1987 when Richard S. Witherow became President/CEO, 10 employees have been recognized for more than 25 years of service (including a father-son combo). Mr. Charles Walters, who has run the company for the Witherow family since 1993 as General Manager/Secretary, has more than 38 years of roofing experience. In fact the company’s average length of employment for its 50+ employees is 10 years.
|
| NUMBERS |
|
Although the total number of roofing systems installed is unknown, it is interesting to note that in 1973 Jim Witherow reported that the “rapid development of San Diego had led to the installation of 50,000 roofs by his company.”
Numbers that are known are the 59 years in the Better Business Bureau (one of only 18 companies in the BBB’s Gold Circle of Accredited Businesses with 50+ years of membership). Also, check our state contractor license number of 104525 versus today’s licenses being issued in the 900000’s.

| FUTURE |
|
Continue to train our employees on safety, roofing applications, driver training and customer service.
Be sensitive to the needs of the community. A partial list of past charitable recipients include American Red Cross, Little League, Nativity Prep Academy, Country Friends, Ronald McDonald House, World Beat Center in Balboa Park, Scripps Mercy Hospital and Tijuana flood victims. These are tough times and we must try to help those in need when we can.
And finally, rejoice in the knowledge that J. P. Witherow Roofing Co. continues in 2012 as the oldest and one of the most respected family-owned and operated roofing contractors in San Diego County. |
